If you’re looking for underrated and less crowded national parks, you can’t do much better than Black Canyon of the Gunnison. I first visited this park by tacking it onto an epic national park road trip many moons ago and wasn’t sure whether it would be worth the stop.

Let me tell you, it was, and as a result of that trip (and many since) I’ve come up with this list of the best things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

The depth and enormity of this canyon is hard to describe. Peering down into Black Canyon of the Gunnison one gets a similar but different feeling from looking out at the Grand Canyon.. You’ve got to see it for yourself.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is tucked Southwest of Colorado with two distinct sections: the North Rim and the South Rim. It has roughly 30,750 acres of wilderness, and the deepest point plunges more than 2,700 feet.

The park is known for its sheer cliff walls, dramatic gorges, and overlooks. I recommend visiting the South Rim since it’s the most beautiful and also where most visitors spend their time.

Now let’s get to it. Ready for fifteen of the best things to do in the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park? Let’s go!

Taking a drive along the South Rim Road is, undoubtedly, one of the best things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This 7 miles stretch has jaw-dropping canyon views from every angle. The drive starts from Tomichi Point and ends at High Point, with 12 different viewpoints along the way.

15. Drop by the South Rim Visitor Center

The visitor’s center should be your first stop when visiting the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The center is located on Highway 347 and is packed with exhibits, ranger books, newspapers, maps, the park film, a bookstore, and permits for your convenience.

This is the perfect starting point to get around the Park and discover the best things to do and attractions to see. Although its operation hours may vary by season, there’s a self-registration kiosk for permits in case you find the center closed.

14. Drive the South Rim Road and take in the sweeping vistas.

Note that while most of the viewpoints are accessible from the road, some are located further away. Therefore, you’ll need to take a short walk to reach them. Nonetheless, the views that await you are well worth the effort.

13. Hike the Warner Point Trail

If you only have to pick one nature trail to explore in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, let it be the Warner Point Trail. This 1.5-mile round-trip trail takes you through the desert forest with benches placed along the route to rest and take in the stunning views. Therefore, you can sit on one of its benches, relax, and enjoy the picturesque vistas of the canyon and the river.

Remember, there are many things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, but hiking the Warner Point Trail should top your list.

12. Marvel at the Painted Wall

Sometimes, words are not enough to describe the beauty of the Painted Wall. It’s a place you have to come and see for yourself to truly appreciate its wonders.

The Painted Wall is a 2,250-foot-tall cliff made up of several types of rock, including gneiss, schist, and pegmatite. The rock’s different colors represent different layers formed over millions of years through geological processes such as erosion and uplift.

And since it’s one of the most popular attractions in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison national park, make sure to arrive early to avoid crowds.

11. Hike the Oak Flat Loop Trail

Another trail worth adding to your list of things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the Oak Flat Loop Trail. With a distance of 2 miles round trip and taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, this trail is perfect if you want to go below the rim without doing a long and strenuous inner canyon hike.

As you hike through forests of Douglas fir trees, aspen, and oak, you’ll be treated to great views of the far canyon wall. However, remember that this is a challenging trail as it goes a short distance below the rim. So, wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water.

Pro Tip

Drive East Portal Road down to the river. Most visitors stick to the rim overlooks and miss this steep, winding road that drops 2,000 feet in 5 miles to the Gunnison River. You will understand the scale of the canyon in a way the rim views cannot match. Not recommended for large RVs or trailers.

Another exciting activity to add to your list of things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is driving the East Portal Road. This 5-mile journey takes you down to the bottom of the canyon and the Gunnison River. While driving, you’ll be treated to amazing views of the rugged landscape and the rushing waters of the Gunnison River.

10. Try Fly-Fishing in the Gunnison River

I have to admit I’m not a good angler, but that didn’t deter me from fishing during my trip. After all, this is one of the outstanding things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

The Gunnison River is home to a variety of fish, including cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and brown trout, and has been designated as a Gold Medal Water and Wild Trout Water. You will need a Colorado fishing license, and there are some regulations to follow.

However, the opportunity to cast your line into this pristine river is a true delight for any angler. For full details on the regulations and how to obtain the permit, visit the national park website.

9. Take a Drive Along East Portal Road

However, note that vehicles with trailers or those longer than 22 feet are not permitted on this road. And if you’re looking for a place to picnic or camp, there are spots available at the base.

8. Marvel at the Many Overlooks

If checking out incredible vistas is on your list of things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park then you’re in luck! There are 12 (defined) incredible overlooks in the park, all of which offer a unique perspective into Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

The best one of these vistas to catch a sunset in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the aptly named Sunset Point which frames the Gunnison River beautifully to the west.

My other personal favorite overlooks in no specific order are Sunset View, Wagner Point, Painted Wall View, and Chasm View plus one more that’s coming up on this list!

7. Enjoy Stargazing at Dragon Point

As the sun sets and darkness takes over, the sky becomes an endless canvas of stars. Dragon Point, one of the 12 overlooks, is a perfect spot for stargazing. The lack of light pollution in the area allows for an exceptional view of the Milky Way. For an enhanced look at the starry sky, carry/hire your binoculars or telescope.

Chasm View and Sunset View are also great places to witness the night sky. Just make sure to dress warmly, as temperatures can drop at night.

6. Wildlife Spotting

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is home to a number of wildlife that have adapted to its harsh and rocky terrain. Some of them include black bears, chipmunks, bobcats, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. The Park is also home to over 125 bird species, most of which can be seen during spring and summer.

The best time to see most of the animals is during dawn and dusk when they are most active. Also, respect their home and keep a safe distance.

If you’re a wildlife lover the be sure to include this one on your list of exciting things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park!

Imagine waking up to the sound of nature and smelling the fresh air while enjoying your morning cup of coffee. Camping in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is one of the most adventurous and exciting ways to experience the Park’s beauty.

5. Take a Boat tour of the Gunnison River

Take a boat tour of the Gunnison River. If you’re looking for a different way to explore the beauty of the Gunnison River, consider the 90-minute Morrow Point Boat Tour.

This leisurely excursion runs from summer till Labor Day and offers views of the canyon from the river. If you’re interested in this tour, you’ll need to make it early. So check the park’s website for available dates and times.

NOTE: The boat tours will NOT be running until further notice.

4. Camping

This is one of the best things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, whether you choose the North Rim, South Rim, or East Portal Campgrounds. Just be prepared to pack in your supplies, including food and water, and a good sense of humor.

3. Explore the Inner Canyon

The inner-canyon of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is for those seeking a next-level adventure. This area is designated wilderness and requires a permit to visit.

The depths of this area are impossible to accurately describe. It’s a feeling you won’t forget. Listening the rush of the mighty Gunnison River and looking up at the massive canyon walls one realizes how small we truly are.

For those who want to get to know the park even better, add exploring the inner-canyon to your list of things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

2. Hike the Rim Rock Trail

The Rim Rock Trail is a must when considering things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. With a distance of only 1 mile point to point, this trail is perfect for all ages and skill levels.

1. Marvel into the Canyon from Gunnison Point

For my money, Gunnison Point is the ultimate viewpoint at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. From this epic spot, you are treated to panoramic views of Black Canyon in all its glory.

One can gaze endlessly down into the hard to fathom depths of the canyon below while also marveling at the striking beauty of the canyon walls.

On days when you have the overlook to yourself, take a moment to listen to the wind and the sounds of the rushing river way down below.

This is a must-see addition to any proper list of things to do in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

The Painted Wall is best viewed from the South Rim’s Painted Wall View overlook. At 2,250 feet, it is the tallest vertical cliff in Colorado, and the light-colored pegmatite veins look like abstract art. Morning light is best.

Tips for Visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (or any national park)

Permit Systems and Reservations

Check to see if the national park you’re visiting has a permit or reservation system in place before visiting. As parks become increasingly crowded more has to be done to safeguard them which means controlling the hundreds of millions of people who visit these places each year.

Popular national parks with reservation systems of some kind include Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion, Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Arches, Acadia, Denali, and more.

Want Less Crowds? Try a National Forest!

Try visiting a national forest while you’re on your trip to avoid the crowds. There are 155 national forests in America, many of which are equally as beautiful as the national parks they neighbor and only see a fraction of the visitors.

For example, try the Flathead National Forest next to Glacier National Park, the Bridger-Teton next to Grand Teton, and the Dixie which borders nearly all of the Utah National Parks.

Practice Safety, Seriously

National parks are amazing but wild places so it is essential to practice basic safety while visiting them. Every year people die while vacationing in national parks. This is easily avoided by:

  • Sticking to trails
  • Checking the weather before going out on a hike
  • Maintaining a safe distance between wildlife which means at least 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from predators
  • Avoid ledges with steep drop offs

How to Get to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

The nearest airport is Montrose Regional (MTJ), about 25 miles from the South Rim entrance and roughly 40 minutes. Grand Junction Regional (GJT) is 80 miles and about 1.5 hours. From Montrose, take US-50 east to Highway 347 south. The South Rim is the main visitor area and the only side open year-round.
